Reiki I - Integration & Deepening
Day 68 of your Reiki path

Reiki and the Five Senses

Seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching as a gate to mindfulness

Aim of the Day

Seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching as a gate to mindfulness

✦   Impulse

Today faithfulness to the simple counts more than a strong experience. An old Reiki master would probably first fold his hands. Then a breath would come. Only then the sentence: The senses bring Reiki back out of imagination and into the present moment. For today's lesson, that sentence is almost enough. Reiki I does not deepen through more technique. It deepens through honest repetition. At some point, the body no longer treats the practice as an idea.

The real training often lies between two quiet breaths. In this field, today's direction carries weight. Do not take it as material for the mind. Take it as a quiet field for the hands. The image helps you: like five small windows all looking into the same garden. This is exactly where it shows whether you already trust the simple. Perhaps you are still reaching for the extraordinary. Perhaps today, for the first time, the obvious is enough.

✦   Deepening

You can imagine this practice like five small windows all looking into the same garden. The image is not proof. It is only a help in slowing down. When you place your hands today, nothing special has to happen. More important is whether you notice the small things. Observe where calm arises without your having ordered it. A calm breath can be a teaching. An honest doubt as well.

You do not need any great effort for the practice. Choose a place where you do not have to react for a few minutes. Sit so the body is not working against the posture. Begin in Gassho, not as a pose but as a gathering. The palms touch. In this way the active and the receptive sides meet. Today's image stays in the background: like five small windows all looking into the same garden.

✦   Practice

Before placing the hands, notice one impression from each: a sound, a color, a smell, a touch, a taste. Then begin the treatment. Stay simple with it. If warmth arises, let warmth be there. If no warmth arises, do not turn it into a problem. If thoughts come, that is not failure. A thought is only a visitor. You do not have to offer it tea. Return to the hands as often as necessary. A master recognizes progress differently. He does not ask whether thoughts disappear. He sees whether a student returns more kindly.

The confusion today lies in interpreting before sensing. You can use the practice to evaluate yourself. Then the touch becomes tighter. You may want to force an effect. Then the practice loses its dignity. Reiki I remains a school of clear simplicity. The hands rest in place. The breath finds its way. The body answers in its own language. Today, this concrete form especially protects you: Before placing the hands, notice one impression from each: a sound, a color, a smell, a touch, a taste. Then begin the treatment.

✦   Example

An example from practice: A student heard the street noise during Reiki and became annoyed. Later he used hearing itself as a gate into the present. This example is not more important than your own experience. It only shows that themes like this rarely remain abstract. They touch the body. They touch the rhythm of the day. They touch language, touch itself, and the courage to leave something simple.

In Reiki, helping begins with not overreaching. Before every interpretation there is restraint. Before well-intentioned helping, there is respect. You yourself are not a practice object either. Do not treat your body like something that has to be repaired quickly. Treat it like an old companion. In this lesson, that applies especially to this direction: Seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching as a gate to mindfulness

✦   Integration

A clean ending protects the simplicity of the whole practice. Release the hands slowly and remain seated. Feel whether the body keeps working. Perhaps the breath becomes deeper. Perhaps you notice tiredness only now. Perhaps a clear sentence comes. Perhaps everything stays quiet. The after-effect belongs to the treatment. The image remains quietly with it: like five small windows all looking into the same garden.

Afterward, do not write much, but write truthfully. Note where the hands rested. Note what you could perceive in the body. Also note which inner attitude became visible. A simple sentence about breath, resistance, warmth, boundary or calm is enough. The journal does not have to shine. It is meant to be honest. Today, what this form of practice brought forth may become especially visible: Before placing the hands, notice one impression from each: a sound, a color, a smell, a touch, a taste. Then begin the treatment.

✦   Afterglow

To close, take this question with you: Which sense brought you into the present most quickly? Do not answer immediately. Let it move through your day. Perhaps it will show itself while walking. Perhaps while eating. Perhaps in a conversation or shortly before sleep. Then you will understand the old hint better. Reiki does not end when the hands are lifted. It shows itself in how you continue to live.

When you close this day, do so without haste. Bow inwardly to simplicity. In Reiki I it is not a beginner's mistake. It is the foundation. Take today's image with you: like five small windows all looking into the same garden. Everything that comes later stands more firmly when this simplicity remains alive. This is also true at the threshold to Reiki II.

  Practice
✧   Reiki and the Five Senses - Practice  ·  10 Min.
  1. Sit in Gassho and allow three calm breaths to come without shaping the breath.
  2. Inwardly say: Today I let this lesson become simple and practical in my hands.
  3. Place your attention on your hands, your Hara and the space around you. Let the hands arrive where the body quietly says yes.
  4. If a symbol is appropriate, use it inwardly and quietly. If not, simple laying-on of hands is fully enough.
  5. Carry this practical trace into your hands: a sound, a color, a smell, a touch, a taste. Then begin the treatment.
  6. Remain still. When thoughts come, return without harshness to breath, hands and body weight.
  7. Close with both hands at the Hara. Feel your feet and release the practice consciously.
  Meditation
✧   Meditation on Reiki and the Five Senses  ·  12 Min.
  1. Close your eyes and imagine sitting in a quiet, warm room.
  2. Before you appears the theme: Seeing, hearing, smelling, tasting and touching as a gate to mindfulness. Look at it without immediately making anything out of it.
  3. Inwardly place soft light on your hands, your Hara and your heart space. Let the light stay gentle, not glaring.
  4. Ask quietly: What does this lesson want to show me in practice today?
  5. Wait for an answer as a body feeling, an image, a word or simple knowing. Force nothing.
  6. Connect the answer with the title of this day: Reiki and the Five Senses. Notice whether your body becomes wider or tighter.
  7. Bow inwardly, let the image dissolve and return slowly to the room.
What will I take concretely from this lesson into my next Reiki practice?

Once you are signed up, single days become a path: your progress is saved, your journal is kept, and the attunement days open at the right time.
